New bill would oversee government access to your email | Redux

New bill would oversee government access to your email

Federal law enforcement agencies soon may have their hands tied when it comes to accessing your email and other personal data if a new bill currently making its way through Congress becomes law. Laws governing the privacy of your emails were drafted in the mid-1980s, long before AOL and Gmail. But efforts to update those rules have some fearing the government's fingers will be flipping through their digital mail. Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. , has drafted a substitute bill for the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, which was originally written in 1986 long before things like electronic archiving and cloud storage. The update, which will be under review next Thursday, modernizes rules for police seeking to obtain private email for investigative purposes -- rules that had been surprisingly lax.

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

(MoneyWatch) The desktop computer industry made use of to have a killer yearly trade show in Las Vegas called Comdex. It brought out all the movers and shakers, a genuine who's who of a market that controlled the technology globe. Uncharacteristically early to an after-show party, I walked up to bench to obtain the first of exactly what would surely be numerous drinks that night. Standing there, alone like me, was my equivalent at arch-rival Intel, sales and marketing chief Paul Otellini. We were competitors, but that didn't stop us from striking up a laid-back talk. Nice guy, I bear in mind thinking. Years later on, I was shocked to find out that Otellini was being groomed to come to be Intel's 5th chief executive officer. Then once again, I should not have been.

"We thought, if Apple were going to do it, how would they do it? They would do more than just make a cool product," John Sculley, a co-founder of Misfit Wearables, says about his company's new fitness gadget, the Shine. It's something you can imagine a lot of executives saying when talking about their company's new product, but Sculley knows a little more about Apple than the average tech executive. He was, of course, the CEO of the company from the mid-1980s until 1993 and is famous for his break with Steve Jobs. Since then Sculley has invested in a handful of Internet-based businesses, but he now finds himself back in the hardware and software business with a new product. Together with his partner Sonny Vu, who is the CEO of the company, Misfits Wearables is building what it believes is the most unique and desirable fitness gadget yet.
